Greece introduces reduced nine-month military service for specific recruits

Greece has introduced new regulations regarding mandatory military service, specifically targeting recruits from the class of 2029. Under Law 5265/2026, individuals born between January 1 and May 15, 2008, who enlist during the initial recruitment cycle in late August or early September 2026, may be eligible for a reduced service period of nine months instead of the standard twelve.

To qualify for this reduction, recruits must complete their primary military obligation without interruption. This measure is intended as an incentive for young citizens to fulfill their service at an earlier age. Those who request a deferment for higher education will not be eligible for the shortened nine-month term.

Additionally, the Greek authorities have simplified the process for requesting military deferments for students. Applicants can now request a deferment as prospective students by submitting documentation proving their eligibility for admission or enrollment, without needing to be officially registered at an educational institution first. Applications are processed electronically via the official Recruitment Service website using Taxisnet credentials.
