Greek military recruitment and service reforms

Overview

Greece has implemented new measures regarding military personnel and recruitment. Under Law 5265/2026, the government introduced a reduced nine-month military service period for specific recruits, specifically targeting those born between January 1 and May 15, 2008, who enlist in late 2026. To qualify for this reduction, recruits must complete their obligation without interruption; those requesting deferments for higher education are ineligible. The law also simplified the electronic deferment process for prospective students.

In addition to reforms for mandatory service, the Ministry of National Defense announced the recruitment of 1,000 Professional Soldiers (EPOPs) for 2026. These positions are distributed across the Hellenic Army, Navy, and Air Force, with a notable inclusion of 25 positions in the Joint Informatics Corps, marking a new priority for digital and technological specialties.

According to the recruitment details published via the Supreme Council for the Selection of Personnel (ASEP), the 1,000 positions are allocated as follows: 370 to the Hellenic Army, 300 to the Hellenic Navy, 50 to the Hellenic Navy for Operations/Communications, 250 to the Hellenic Air Force, 25 to the Joint Informatics Corps, and 5 to the Joint Legal Corps. Eligible Greek citizens aged 18 to 25 must apply electronically through respective General Staff applications. Applicants must pass psychological, medical, and athletic evaluations, with a submission deadline set for 20 days from the date of publication.
