Greece introduces permanent staffing for municipal nurseries

Greece's Ministry of Interior is implementing a new framework to transition municipal nurseries, creches, and kindergartens from fixed-term contracts to permanent staffing. Under the new Local Government Code, municipalities are required to make organizational changes by September 30, 2026, to create approximately 9,000 permanent organic positions.

Recruitment for these roles will be conducted exclusively through ASEP to establish a unified national hiring system. The positions cover a wide range of specialties, including early childhood educators, assistant nursery teachers, social workers, psychologists, nurses, nutritionists, cooks, cleaning staff, and drivers.

A key requirement for pedagogical positions is a minimum of 24 months of professional experience in public or private childcare settings. Municipalities and municipal public benefit enterprises must update their internal service organizations or operating regulations to accommodate these permanent roles.
