Greece investigates child drowning incidents after pool fatality and beach rescue

A six‑year‑old boy died on 2 July after drowning in a swimming pool at a rental two‑story house in Messinia, Greece. Emergency services were called, resuscitation attempts failed and the child was pronounced dead at a local health centre. The boy’s mother was detained and faces a charge of negligent homicide while authorities examine the pool’s compliance with safety regulations.

On a separate occasion, two minors were rescued from dangerous surf at the Spianza beach near Pyrgos. A 12‑year‑old and her 15‑year‑old cousin struggled in the waves, prompting a coast‑guard lifeguard and a volunteer rescue diver to intervene. Both children were retrieved alive, received first aid, and were taken to the General Hospital of Pyrgos for evaluation.

Greek emergency services are handling both incidents, with investigations focusing on safety standards and preventive measures to avoid future drownings.
