Greece issues extreme wildfire alerts for multiple regions
Greece is facing heightened wildfire risks, with the General Secretariat for Civil Protection issuing severe warnings for several regions. For Thursday, August 13, 2026, an extreme fire risk (category 5) has been forecast for Attica, Boeotia, Evia, Argolida, Corinthia, and Lesvos.
Many other areas remain under a very high fire risk (category 4), including Crete, parts of the Peloponnese, Central Greece, the North and South Aegean islands, and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. In response, authorities have implemented emergency measures, such as prohibiting vehicle access and outdoor activities in various forest areas and protected Natura sites to prevent accidental ignitions.
In a separate incident, a 16-year-old was arrested in Chania for allegedly starting a fire in the Akrotiri area on August 11. While the fire was contained before spreading, the incident occurred during a period of high fire danger.
