Greece offers up to 36,000 euros for home renovations

The Greek government is implementing the ‘Home Renovation’ program, funded by approximately 500 million euros from the 2021-2027 ESPA framework. The initiative aims to increase the availability of suitable housing for owner-occupation or long-term rental by providing subsidies for renovations and mild energy upgrades.

Subsidies can reach up to 36,000 euros per residence, with additional coverage of up to 2,500 euros for studies, permits, and inspections. For renovation works, the program covers 60% to 80% of costs, while energy upgrades are covered at 20% to 40%. The program targets low- and middle-income households, specifically natural persons meeting certain income and ownership criteria.

Eligible properties include both currently occupied homes and vacant properties. For vacant homes, owners must commit to using the property as a primary residence or renting it out on a long-term basis for at least five years following the completion of works. To encourage participation, authorities have recently relaxed certain criteria, such as reducing the minimum ownership requirement from 50% to 20%.
