Greece launches AI platform to expedite vehicle insurance fine appeals

The Greek General Secretary of Information Systems and Digital Governance, Demosthenis Anagnostopoulos, announced the deployment of an artificial‑intelligence system to speed up the examination of appeals against fines for uninsured or unregistered vehicles. The AI acts as a digital assistant, analysing each appeal and promptly advising the responsible civil servant on whether to accept or reject it, while the final decision remains with the official.

The new tool is intended to reduce processing times from days to minutes, lower administrative workload and improve road safety by deterring drivers who insure their cars only briefly or avoid inspections. Authorities previously sent about 300,000 warning notices and recently issued roughly 32,000 new notices, resulting in fines totaling around €12.5 million. Citizens have ten days after a notification to acknowledge receipt and ten working days to lodge an appeal, with August excluded from the deadline. Parallel to the AI rollout, a unified payment portal for public debts is also being developed.
