Greek tax authority issues €12.5 million fines for uninsured vehicles, introduces AI for appeals

The Independent Authority of Public Revenue (AADE) has begun a new round of cross‑checks on vehicle insurance compliance. On the basis of electronic checks dated 10 March 2026, 32 205 new infringement notices have been issued to owners of uninsured vehicles, amounting to a total of €12 545 250. The fines affect 30 248 natural persons and 1 553 legal entities.

Owners are notified via SMS, e‑mail or, where electronic contact is unavailable, by registered mail. All notices and vehicle details are accessible through the “Cross‑checks” (Διασταυρωτικοί Έλεγχοι) application on oximata.gov.gr or gov.gr using Taxisnet credentials. Recipients may lodge an electronic appeal within ten working days of notification. For the first time, a dedicated Artificial Intelligence system assists auditors by analysing the submitted documents, generating a confidence score and a reasoned recommendation, though the final decision remains with the human inspectors.

The AI‑supported process aims to speed up the handling of thousands of appeals while preserving the authority’s oversight.
