Greece launches first unified digital geological map
The Hellenic Geological Survey (HAGME) has launched Greece’s first unified digital geological map, consolidating 67 years of scientific research. The digital infrastructure covers 131,910 square kilometers of Greek territory through 325 map sheets at a 1:50,000 scale.
The database includes more than 1,500 geological formations, detailing the country’s geological structure, rock types, ages, tectonic structures, and faults. According to HAGME Director General Dionysios Goutis, the map serves as a strategic tool for developmental planning, infrastructure projects, environmental protection, and natural hazard management.
By making vast amounts of geoscientific data accessible, the initiative aims to support public administration, the scientific community, and entrepreneurship, transforming decades of scientific knowledge into developmental capital for the nation.
