Hellenic Geological Survey digital initiatives
Overview
The Hellenic Geological Survey (EAMGME/HAGME) has introduced new digital tools to manage and disseminate Greece’s geological data.
Initially, the agency released ‘Geotreasures’, a digital application designed to showcase the country’s volcanic heritage. This tool utilizes interactive maps to provide information on the South Aegean Volcanic Arc, including sites such as Santorini, Nisyros, Milos, and Methana, to assist with research and education.
Following this, the survey launched Greece’s first unified digital geological map. This infrastructure consolidates 67 years of research, covering 131,910 square kilometers of territory. The database contains details on over 1,500 geological formations, including rock types, tectonic structures, and faults. Director General Dionysios Goutis stated the map is intended to serve as a strategic tool for infrastructure projects, environmental protection, and natural hazard management.
