Greece launches its first National Housing Strategy to expand affordable homes

Minister Domna Michailidou announced that Greece has adopted its first National Housing Strategy, a roadmap of 50 measures intended to increase the supply of affordable housing. The plan invites citizens to submit proposals through the public consultation portal stegasi.gov.gr.

Immediate support includes a one‑month rent refund for about one million residents and a two‑month refund for public employees stationed abroad. Under the "My Home" scheme, 24 000 young people have already obtained housing. The "Renovation of Housing" programme has issued more than 50 000 eligibility certificates, and the required co‑ownership share for eligible properties has been lowered from 50 % to 20 %.

The strategy also targets the reuse of idle military camps, creating approximately 2 300 social‑rent homes for vulnerable families, and plans to auction five publicly owned properties in Pyrgos, Kalamata, Paiania, Larissa and Thessaloniki by September. Additionally, the "Neighborhood Nannies" initiative has recorded 500 agreements, supporting 5 000 mothers and 3 500 nannies.

The comprehensive approach combines rent subsidies, renovation incentives, new construction and social services to address Greece’s housing shortage.
