Greece launches multi-million euro initiatives for fishing sector

The Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food has announced new initiatives under the Fisheries, Aquaculture and Sea (PALYTH) 2021-2027 program to modernize and support the fishing sector.

One initiative provides 16 million euros in funding for investments in fishing vessels that do not increase fishing capacity. Applications are open until September 15, 2026. The program aims to support approximately 400 professional fishers and businesses, with a specific focus on small-scale coastal fisheries and remote islands. Funding rates range from 50% to 85%, with higher subsidies available for vessels in remote areas or small-scale coastal vessels under 12 meters.

Additionally, a 62.1 million euro project has been launched to implement a digital monitoring system for 10,743 small-scale coastal fishing vessels. Co-financed by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund, the project involves the installation of tracking devices and tablets to automate the recording of geographic location, course, and activity time. This digital upgrade aims to enhance transparency, traceability, and the sustainable management of fishing resources through improved data analysis and GIS integration.
