Greece launches social leasing for electric vehicles

Greece is finalizing a social leasing program designed to provide low- and middle-income households with access to electric vehicles through affordable long-term rentals. Approved by the European Commission as part of the National Social Climate Plan, the initiative has a budget of €165.3 million and aims to support approximately 15,000 transport-vulnerable households.

Under the program, monthly lease payments are expected to be capped at approximately €145 to €150. This fee is intended to be an all-inclusive package covering the vehicle usage, insurance, and regular maintenance. To maintain these low rates, the state will provide subsidies of up to €13,000 per lease agreement. Additional support of up to €15,000 is available for persons with disabilities, and specific provisions exist to cover 100% of the costs for electric wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and hand bikes for 13,200 eligible individuals.

The lease term is planned for four years. While the current framework does not guarantee automatic ownership of the vehicle at the end of the term, authorities are working to establish potential buyout options for participants. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is currently processing the official publication of the measure.
