Greece leads EU average in organic farming share

Greece maintains a significant presence in the organic farming sector, with 17.2% of its utilized agricultural land under organic management as of 2022. This figure places Greece sixth among European Union member states and well above the EU average of approximately 11%.

The European Union has established a strategic goal to ensure that at least 25% of its total agricultural land is organically cultivated by 2030. Currently, organic farming in the EU covers about 17 million hectares. The sector has seen substantial economic growth, with retail sales of organic products in the EU exceeding 45 billion euros, doubling over the last decade despite recent inflationary pressures.

The EU Organic Action Plan focuses on three main pillars: increasing consumer demand and trust, expanding production and strengthening the value chain, and enhancing the environmental sustainability of organic agriculture. There is a specific emphasis on supporting local production and short supply chains to ensure more value remains with local producers and economies.
