EU organic farming expansion and goals

Overview

European Union member states are making progress toward the strategic goal of having 25% of total agricultural land organically cultivated by 2030.

Spain currently leads Europe in organic farming surface area, although increasing domestic consumption remains a challenge. During the fifth annual European Organic Production Day, the benefits of organic agriculture—such as reduced reliance on chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and antimicrobials—were highlighted as part of an initiative to promote sustainable food systems.

In Greece, organic management covers 17.2% of utilized agricultural land as of 2022, placing the country sixth among EU member states and above the EU average of approximately 11%. The EU Organic Action Plan continues to focus on expanding production, strengthening value chains, and increasing consumer demand to support local economies.
