Greece leaves EU fiscal surveillance after 16-year oversight

The European Commission has decided to remove Greece from the EU fiscal surveillance mechanism, citing improved macro‑economic indicators. Greece joins ten other EU member states that have successfully exited the monitoring regime, allowing the country to fully restore normal economic governance.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis described the decision as the definitive end of a 16‑year cycle that began with the financial crisis, emphasizing that the removal creates conditions for higher wages, pension boosts, job creation, debt reduction and relief for the younger generation, while noting that further reforms remain necessary.
