Greece begins 2026-2027 school year with ceremonies and safety drives

The 2026-2027 school year has commenced across various regions in Greece, marked by religious ceremonies, safety initiatives, and discussions regarding educational needs.

In several regions, including Serres, Patras, Larissa, and Kalamata, schools held traditional blessing ceremonies (Agiasmos) attended by students, educators, and local officials. Notable events included the start of the term at the Arsakeio Schools in Patras and the Music School of Larissa. In Piraeus, the Metropolitan Church's educational facilities were inaugurated following renovations funded by a donation from Vangelis Marinakis.

To support the transition, the Hellenic Police launched an awareness campaign in Central Macedonia, distributing road safety information to students and parents to ensure safe commutes. Meanwhile, the Ikaria Parents and Guardians Association raised concerns regarding the rising cost of school supplies and the need for better funding for public education.

On the labor front, the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) reminded parents of their legal right to up to four days of paid leave per year for school monitoring purposes.
