Greek 2026–27 education admissions update
Entities: Greek government · National and Kapodistrian University of Athens · Aristotle University of Thessaloniki · Greek Ministry of Education · Greek Parliament
Overview
The Ministry of Education posted the 2026 Panhellenic results on 3 July, opened the electronic admission form (Michi) shortly after and closed it on 16 July. Parallel e‑Enrolments for secondary‑school placement ended on 8 July, with General Lyceum allocations released on 13 July. Supporting documents for foreign‑school and second‑chance applicants were accepted 15‑21 July, a second registration phase for exceptional cases is planned for September, and a severe‑illness quota portal opened on 17 July. The 2026‑27 school year will begin on 11 September, with teachers returning on 1 September. University admission bases were announced on 23 July, a few days early. Of 89 032 candidates, 68 788 university places were offered. Cut‑off scores remained highest for medicine (Athens 18 500, Thessaloniki 18 675) while engineering and polytechnic programmes saw strong gains, e.g., Mechanical Engineering in Heraklion above 18 200 points. The School of Firefighters and School of Rescue Services recorded notable jumps. About 9 739 seats stayed vacant under the Minimum Admission Base rule; success rates were 97.5 % for General Lyceum and 63.2 % for EPAL candidates. Architecture at NTUA topped individual scores (20 995 points). Mayors, the Metropolitan of Grevena and other officials issued congratulatory messages. Later analysis showed a sharp rise in cutoff scores for engineering, informatics and newly opened military‑school programmes, whose applicant pool expanded from roughly 13 000 to 53 000, pushing base scores to 2 695‑2 125 points. Demand for traditional pedagogy faculties fell, though all pedagogy seats were filled and a top entry score of 15 950 recorded at NTUA. More than 10 000 university places, especially in humanities and teaching fields, remained empty, reflecting a demographic surplus of over two seats per newborn and a shift toward technical studies.
