Greek 2026 education exams and admissions

Overview

As the 2026-27 academic year begins, the Greek Ministry of Education is implementing structural reforms and staffing measures. Following the appointment of 5,259 permanent teachers, the ministry aims to reach 45,000 substitute teachers by the end of September. Educational innovations include the debut of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program in 11 public schools, 51 new or updated curricula, and the introduction of Ethics as a mandatory subject. To combat childhood obesity, new health regulations will also ban processed snacks, chocolates, and certain deli meats from school canteens.

A major ESPA-funded project exceeding 56 million euros is underway to enhance school libraries, aiming to establish 25 preschool libraries, 227 new primary and secondary libraries, and upgrade 800 existing ones, supported by 400 specialized librarians.

Regarding labor rights, the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) notes that parents of children up to 18 attending primary or secondary school are entitled to up to four working days of school monitoring leave per child per calendar year. This leave is granted without wage reduction and can be used for activities such as the opening blessing (agiasmos).

Infrastructure and local coordination remain central. While municipalities like Elassona have completed repairs, political leaders in Central Macedonia continue to criticize administrative delays in student transportation. Additionally, the Teachers' Federation (DOE) has raised concerns that new directives for kindergarten management may conflict with existing presidential decrees.

Schools are scheduled to reopen on 11 September for religious blessings, with regular lessons starting on 14 September. Local holidays in Aigaleo, Trikala, Kalambaka, and Neo Psychiko will impact specific schedules.
