MedWatch platform reports 91% drop in illegal medical advertising in Greece
Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis has announced the first results from MedWatch, a new digital monitoring platform designed to detect illegal medical advertising and unethical practices. Within its first ten days of operation in Athens, Piraeus, and Thessaloniki, the platform recorded a 91% decrease in online advertisements for medical procedures, dropping from 141 to just 13 campaigns.
The platform has identified numerous violations, including 119 instances of dentists advertising aesthetic treatments like Botox and hyaluronic acid, which are restricted to therapeutic use. Other findings include 231 cases of unapproved stem cell therapies, 911 prohibited advertisements for weight loss and injectable treatments, and 468 instances of non-physicians advertising medical services.
Findings are being forwarded to relevant Medical Associations and the National Transparency Authority for further investigation. Georgiadis noted that the platform aims to restore public trust in the medical profession and will soon expand its monitoring to include dentists, physiotherapists, and dietitians nationwide. The Minister also addressed the referral of complaints regarding George Patoulis, President of the Athens Medical Association, to the National Transparency Authority for formal review.
