Greek medical regulation and oversight
Overview
The Medical Association of Athens (ISA) issued guidelines to assist citizens in reporting medical errors, unethical conduct, and legal violations to the appropriate authorities, such as local medical associations or the National Transparency Authority. These guidelines followed the death of George Mazonakis.
Subsequently, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis introduced MedWatch, a digital surveillance platform used to monitor medical advertising and service providers. Within its first ten days of operation in Athens, Piraeus, and Thessaloniki, the platform reported a 91% decrease in online advertisements for medical procedures, dropping from 141 to just 13 campaigns. The Minister attributed this to increased compliance and fear of scrutiny.
MedWatch identified several hundred specific violations, including 119 instances of dental practices using hyaluronic acid, mesotherapy, or botox for non-therapeutic purposes, and 231 cases of stem cell therapy claims in facilities requiring regulatory approval from the National Organization for Medicines (EOF). The platform also flagged 911 prohibited advertisements for injectable treatments or weight loss, and 468 instances of non-medical professionals advertising medical services. Additionally, five businesses were found operating without valid certification.
As the MedWatch system expands from its initial regions to a nationwide scale to cover all medical associations with electronic registries, officials confirmed that complaints regarding Giorgos Patoulis, President of the ISA, have been forwarded to the National Transparency Authority for investigation. Minister Georgiadis noted that while he maintains a personal friendship with Patoulis, all institutional figures are subject to oversight to restore trust in the medical profession. Future expansion of the platform will include monitoring for physiotherapists and nutritionists.
