Greece military recruitment delays cause disruption for conscripts
Thousands of Greek conscripts and their families are facing significant disruption following sudden changes to military recruitment schedules. Individuals who were originally expected to enlist in November 2026 have received new notifications from recruitment offices rescheduling their service to January 2027, as part of the first intake (A' ESSO) of 2027.
The shift is reportedly due to an unexpected surge in the number of conscripts for November 2026, which exceeded projections and created logistical challenges regarding equipment, administration, and personnel care. To address this, the Ministry of National Defence is planning to open additional training centers and move the January 2027 intake forward to better accommodate those obligated to serve.
Additional changes to the service structure include a move toward enlistment exclusively through Army recruitment centers, as the Navy and Air Force training centers will no longer accept privates to ensure homogeneous training and resource conservation. Furthermore, a nine-month service term has been established for all designated privates. These administrative shifts have caused confusion regarding enlistment dates for those who had previously interrupted their service deferments in July 2026.
