Greece expands student housing and welfare measures

Greek Minister of Education Sofia Zacharaki has announced a comprehensive plan to upgrade student welfare through increased housing allowances, new dormitory capacity, and enhanced meal provisions.

The housing allowance has seen a 150% increase compared to 2019 levels, with total funding projected to reach 90 million euros by 2026. Current rates provide 1,500 euros for students in Athens and Thessaloniki, increasing to 2,000 euros for those in shared accommodation. Students at regional universities receive 2,000 euros, which rises to 2,500 euros if living with roommates.

To address accommodation shortages, the government aims to create over 8,100 new dormitory beds across regions including Crete, Thessaly, Thrace, Western Macedonia, and Western Attica. Major renovation projects are underway, including facilities at the National Technical University of Athens and Panteion University, the latter of which is expected to open in spring 2027. Additionally, 7.45 million euros has been allocated for the School of Fine Arts dormitory.

Funding for free student meals has also been bolstered, with current investment exceeding 56 million euros, and further increases planned for 2027.
