Greece to recruit 30,000 substitute teachers for 2026-2027 school year

The Greek Ministry of Education has announced the first phase of recruitment for approximately 30,000 substitute teachers, scheduled to begin on September 1, 2026. This follows the deadline on August 24, 2026, for candidates to submit their regional preferences via the OPSYD electronic platform.

Minister of Education Sofia Zacharaki emphasized the importance of accelerating staffing processes to ensure teachers are in place before the start of the school year. While the first phase targets 30,000 positions, total recruitment for the 2026-2027 academic year is expected to reach approximately 45,000 educators.

In addition to staffing, the Ministry is working with other government departments to address teacher housing issues, citing successful collaborations in the municipalities of Agiou Vasiliou Rethymnou and Ithaki. Regarding non-state universities, the Minister noted that the legal framework has constitutional recognition and expects two universities, Keele and York, to regain their licenses shortly.
