Greece unveils €5 billion plan to cut electricity prices by 30%
The Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy has unveiled a comprehensive €5 billion strategic plan aimed at reducing retail electricity prices by 30% by 2029. The roadmap focuses on six key pillars: expanding renewable energy sources (RES), enhancing energy storage, improving island interconnections, combating electricity theft, promoting energy efficiency, and fostering energy autonomy through self-consumption.
Funding for the initiative will be drawn from three primary sources: the Social Climate Fund (€2.1 billion), the Islands Fund (€2.3 billion), and the Escape Clause (€600 million). Key measures include a €200 million battery subsidy program for 2027-2028 and a 50% reduction in Public Utility Services (YKO) charges for residential consumers starting in early 2027.
Additionally, DEDDIE is accelerating the rollout of smart meters, targeting 7.7 million installations by 2030 to modernize the grid and reduce network losses. While the government presents these as structural reforms rather than temporary subsidies, opposition parties have criticized the package, arguing it provides insufficient relief to households facing rising heating costs and high taxation.
