Greece to digitize driver licensing and vehicle registration processes

The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has signed a €2.1 million programmatic agreement to implement a digital transformation project aimed at enhancing road safety and reducing bureaucracy. The initiative, developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence and the Foundation for Research and Technology (FORTH), focuses on three main areas: upgrading digital services, creating a comprehensive information system for driver training and testing, and digitizing vehicle license plate management.

Key changes to the driver licensing process include the introduction of cameras and audio recording in examination vehicles to prevent corruption and ensure transparency. The new system will feature a randomized selection of examiners, digital attendance tracking for driving schools, and an electronic mechanism for submitting objections. Additionally, a new mobile and tablet application will be launched to help candidates study the Highway Code through interactive tests and simulations.

Regarding vehicle management, the project aims to digitize the process for replacing license plates due to theft, loss, or destruction. These new services will be hosted on the Government Cloud (G-Cloud) and will be accessible to citizens via gov.gr or the dedicated drivers-vehicles services portal using TaxisNet credentials.
