Digital transformation initiatives in Greece
Overview
Greece is implementing various digital transformation initiatives across regional and national levels. In the Phocis and Karditsa regions, projects are underway to upgrade digital infrastructure, migrate systems to the cloud, and implement smart city technologies, including smart bus stops and natural disaster warning systems.
At the national level, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has formalized a programmatic agreement valued at 2.1 million euros to digitize driver services and road safety processes. This collaboration between the General Secretariat of Information Systems and Digital Governance and the Informatics Institute of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) aims to utilize the Government Cloud (G-Cloud) to enhance service interoperability and reduce bureaucracy.
Key components of this initiative include the digitalization of vehicle license plate replacement processes following theft or loss, as well as enhanced digital services for driver training and examinations. To increase transparency and prevent corruption, the system will introduce a digital lottery for examiners and digital recording of practical driving tests. Specifically, the project will incorporate cameras and audio recording in examination vehicles and implement randomized selection of examiners. Furthermore, the project will provide a mobile and tablet application for learning the Highway Code through interactive tests and simulations, alongside a platform for submitting electronic objections. Citizens can access these services via the gov.gr portal or a dedicated drivers-vehicles website using TaxisNet credentials.
