Paidiki Chara NGO scandal: Arrests and investigations in Greece
Authorities in Greece are investigating the NGO Paidiki Chara following allegations of large-scale fraud involving donations intended for children with serious illnesses. The organization, led by founder Konstantinos Firinidis and his partner Vasiliki Manisioti, is accused of misappropriating millions of euros.
During judicial proceedings in Thessaloniki, Manisioti was ordered to be held in pre-trial detention. She reportedly attributed the financial discrepancies to Firinidis’s alleged gambling addiction, claiming the actual missing amount is lower than the 2.9 million euros cited in the indictment. Other suspects, including Manisioti’s brother and a local football official, were released under restrictive conditions.
The investigation has uncovered two distinct criminal threads: the alleged embezzlement of charitable funds and a separate scheme involving the manipulation of local football matches. Evidence suggests the NGO may have been used as a front for illegal financial and athletic activities. Authorities have also seized luxury items, including designer bags and a Rolex, from the couple’s residence.
Witnesses and parents have come forward with testimonies, alleging that the NGO approached families in hospitals and that some families received only a fraction of the funds raised in their names.
