Greece passes law to make personal assistants permanent and fast‑track social housing
The Greek government approved a comprehensive bill of 7 parts and 64 articles that makes the personal‑assistant scheme for people with disabilities a permanent, nationwide institution. Existing assistants keep their rights, wages rise by 10 % and a transparent points‑based system will allocate new assistants based on income and social criteria. The law also mandates at least 50 mobility‑training instructors for the visually‑impaired, expands early‑childhood intervention, creates a digital disability portal and strengthens the OPEKA agency.
A fast‑track procedure is introduced to convert inactive military camp properties owned by the National Defence Real Estate Fund into 2,300 social housing units with accompanying facilities such as nurseries, pharmacies and food stores. Funded by the EU Social Climate Fund, the new homes are built to high standards and the first units are expected to be delivered by 2028. The measures are part of a 6.5‑billion‑euro National Housing Strategy for 2026‑2035.
