Greece Personal Assistant Program opens new applications in August 2026

The Greek government has announced that the electronic platform for new applications to the Personal Assistant Program will open on Monday, August 24, 2026. The program, aimed at supporting individuals with disabilities, is entering a new phase with several key updates.

Minister of Social Cohesion and Family Domna Michailidou stated that the new period will include increased compensation for both personal assistants and evaluation committee members. Approximately 1,500 current participants do not need to reapply; their participation will continue automatically until December 31, 2026, ensuring uninterrupted support.

To address needs in remote areas, such as mountainous regions and islands with populations under 5,000, a special provision allows for the hiring of a first-degree relative as a personal assistant if no other suitable caregiver is available. The program is now a permanent national initiative funded by approximately €53 million annually through national and European resources, including the ESPA 2021–2027 framework. The Organization of Social Benefits and Solidarity (OPEKA) is the designated beneficiary of this funding.
