Greece police arrest suspects in organized elderly fraud rings
Greek authorities have arrested several individuals involved in organized crime rings targeting elderly citizens through sophisticated telephone scams.
In Lesvos, two men aged 27 and 31 were arrested in Mytilene following warrants related to a fraud case in Stypsi. A woman posing as an accounting office employee convinced an elderly victim to leave €23,000 and jewelry worth approximately €8,000 near his home. Police recovered the cash and most of the valuables. Investigations suggest the group is linked to similar scams in Larissa and Thessaloniki.
In a separate operation, police in Ilia arrested two men suspected of participating in a criminal organization that defrauded elderly people of over €36,000. The group members posed as accountants or tax officials, convincing victims to collect cash and valuables under the pretext of replacing expiring currency or recording assets. The victims would then leave the items in designated spots for the criminals to collect. The suspects face charges including criminal organization, fraud, theft, and money laundering.
