Greece household spending reaches 1,820 euros monthly amid inflation
New data from ELSTAT reveals that the average monthly expenditure for Greek households reached 1,820.20 euros in 2025, a 5.5% increase from 2024. Food and non-alcoholic beverages constitute the largest expense category at 20.4% of the budget. The financial burden is disproportionately higher for the poorest 20% of the population, who spend 54.4% of their income on food and housing combined.
Regarding food inflation, Eurostat reports a 34% increase in food prices across the EU between 2021 and 2026. However, an analysis by Euronews Business indicates that the purchasing power of the Greek minimum wage for food has actually increased by 7% compared to 2021, as wage growth outpaced inflation in the country.
Greece also faces significant demographic challenges, with birth rates declining from 86,390 in 2021 to an estimated 66,532 in 2025. In response, the government has introduced various support measures, including tax exemptions for three-child families starting in 2027 and increased birth grants for larger families beginning in 2026.
