Greece prepares to restart Greece-Cyprus cable research

Greece is preparing to restart research for the electrical interconnection cable between Greece and Cyprus. This process involves the return of a research vessel to the Aegean Sea and the anticipated issuance of a NAVTEX, expected in October.

The initiative requires delicate diplomatic management to navigate relations with Turkey. Athens aims to proceed without compromising its sovereign rights while attempting to avoid new escalations with Ankara. The Greek government intends to issue the NAVTEX as a notification rather than a request for permission, maintaining communication channels without recognizing Turkish claims over the area.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis described the matter as ‘very delicate,’ emphasizing that the project must move forward without any concessions regarding national sovereignty. The project also involves cooperation with Nicosia and French interests.
