Greece prepares to resume Greece-Cyprus subsea cable surveys
Greece is preparing to restart surveys for the electrical interconnection project between Greece and Cyprus. The subsea cable project has become a significant geopolitical issue, involving maritime zones and relations with Turkey.
Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis stated that surveys and cable laying are expected to resume within the next months, potentially by 2026, emphasizing that the project does not require Turkish permission. Athens and Paris have reached an agreement to inform coastal states regarding the resumption of work.
The project involves French participation through Meridiam and technical involvement from Nexans. A French vessel is expected to conduct the surveys. This follows previous tensions in the Kasos region in 2024, where an Italian research vessel for the Crete-Cyprus interconnection faced challenges due to the presence of Turkish naval units.
