Greece proposes digital system for vehicle license plate issuance

The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has launched a public consultation for radical reforms to the vehicle license plate issuance process. The goal is to eliminate delays and bureaucratic hurdles through a new digital system.

Under the proposed legislation, which is part of a broader bill from the Ministry of Development, an automated digital platform will manage the entire lifecycle of license plates. This includes applications, payments, manufacturing, management, issuance, replacement, and delivery. The system will cover private passenger vehicles, buses, trucks, and motorcycles.

Key features of the reform include the creation of an open registry of manufacturers to ensure transparency and flexibility in procurement. For the first time, vehicle owners will have the option to select specific number combinations by paying special fees, which will serve as revenue for the State Budget. To ensure compliance, the regulations propose strict administrative fines ranging from €10,000 to €600,000 for violations of technical specifications or delivery deadlines.
