Greece proposes new laws to regulate AI in the workplace

Greece's Ministry of Labour and Social Security is advancing a new legislative framework to regulate the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automated systems in the workplace. The initiative aims to transpose European Directive 2024/2831 into national law, focusing specifically on improving working conditions for digital platform workers and managing algorithmic human resources.

Minister Niki Kerameus has received the report from the legislative committee, chaired by Ioannis Skandalis of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The proposed law establishes strict boundaries to prevent uncontrolled algorithmic management. Key provisions include a ban on processing sensitive data—such as biometric, health, or psychological information—and a requirement for mandatory human oversight to ensure that critical employment decisions are not made solely by algorithms.

The framework also mandates impact assessments before implementing AI systems and requires transparency for employees regarding the data and algorithms used. The next stage involves consultations with national social partners to finalize the bill. Additionally, the Minister highlighted the need for worker upskilling to adapt to the changing technological landscape, noting that unemployment in the country has recently reached 7.4%.
