Greece Social Climate Plan approved by EU with 4.77 billion euro budget FAST-MOVING
The European Commission has approved Greece's Social Climate Plan, the largest national plan of its kind approved under the EU Social Climate Fund to date. The plan, set to run from 2026 to 2032, will mobilize approximately 4.77 billion euros, with 75% (3.57 billion euros) provided by the EU and 25% (1.2 billion euros) from national resources.
Key objectives include supporting 460,000 vulnerable households to reduce fossil fuel dependence and assisting approximately 1.5 million households and 70,000 micro-enterprises. Specific measures include the energy renovation of 62,000 homes, the installation of 200,000 heat pumps and solar water heating systems, and the creation of 2,800 energy-efficient social housing units. Additionally, 226 million euros are allocated for renovating public student dormitories to benefit 5,930 students.
The plan also addresses transportation, with 1.46 billion euros dedicated to road transport. This includes the introduction of over 200 electric buses in urban areas, the procurement of new metro trains for Athens, and a 'social leasing' program for electric vehicles, allowing 15,000 vulnerable households to lease an electric car for a monthly fee not exceeding 150 euros. By 2032, these investments and reforms are expected to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 811,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
