Greece records 974,000 helmet checks, fines 95,000 violations in safety drive

The Greek Ministry of Citizen Protection and the Hellenic Police concluded a one‑year nationwide “Zero tolerance for non‑use of helmets” campaign. From 26 June 2025 to 5 July 2026, a total of 974,582 traffic checks were carried out across the country.

The checks resulted in 84,943 driver violations and 10,660 passenger violations, amounting to roughly 95,000 fines. The majority of infractions involved motorcycle drivers (67,550 violations, including 2,931 professional couriers), 10,107 passenger violations, 15,940 electric‑personal‑vehicle drivers, 575 trike drivers and 878 ATV drivers.

Under the new Road Traffic Code (Law 5209/2025), penalties were increased to €350 and a 30‑day licence suspension for motorcycle riders, the same fine for drivers who fail to ensure a passenger wears a helmet, €350 for non‑helmet‑wearing passengers, and €30 for electric‑personal‑vehicle drivers. Repeat offences attract higher sanctions. The police emphasized that the campaign aims to change behaviour and promote a safety culture, and they plan to continue intensive checks nationwide.
