West Nile virus case confirmed in Attica, Greece

Health officials reported Greece's first confirmed West Nile virus infection for the 2024 summer season in the Agia Paraskevi district of Attica. Expert Gkikas Magiorkinis said the virus has been endemic in the country each summer since 2010, spreading only via infected mosquitoes that bite birds, and not from person to person. Most infections are mild, but severe neurological disease can occur in less than 1 % of cases, especially among people over 65, the immunocompromised or those with chronic illnesses. Preventive advice includes using insect repellent, eliminating standing water and avoiding mosquito exposure during peak activity.

A second case was identified in the coastal suburb of Glyfada. The municipality, in coordination with the Attica region, will conduct targeted mosquito spraying and has issued public guidance on protective measures. Four districts of Attica have been placed under a red alert for mosquito activity, highlighting the heightened risk and ongoing control efforts.
