Greece reports first West Nile virus case of 2026

The National Public Health Organization (EODY) confirmed Greece's first West Nile virus infection for the 2026 transmission season. The case involves a person over 60 years old who developed meningo‑encephalitis symptoms in late June. The likely place of exposure is the municipality of Agia Paraskevi in the North Athens regional unit.

EODY notes that West Nile virus cases are recorded annually in Greece since 2010, typically during summer and autumn, and are transmitted by bites of infected common mosquitoes that acquire the virus from wild birds. Most infections are asymptomatic or mild; less than 1 % develop serious neurological disease. Older adults, immunocompromised individuals and those with chronic illnesses are at higher risk.

The agency issued renewed guidance urging the public to use approved insect repellents, install screens, wear protective clothing and eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed. Enhanced epidemiological surveillance and coordination with local health authorities are ongoing to monitor any further spread.
