Greek police record over 2,300 helmet violations in a week

During the seventh week of the national "Zero tolerance" campaign (27 July – 2 August 2026), the Hellenic Police carried out 20,988 traffic checks across Greece. A total of 2,340 violations for non‑use of helmets were recorded, including 2,098 driver offences and 250 passenger offences. Under the new Road Code (Law 5209/2025), drivers of two‑wheelers now face a €350 fine and a 30‑day licence suspension, passengers a €350 fine, and riders of light electric personal vehicles a €30 fine. The campaign targets especially professional delivery riders and their employers. Regional data show the highest numbers in Attica (719), the South Aegean (614) and the Ionian Islands (344).

In a related enforcement action, the new Road Code also tightens rules on the left‑hand lane of motorways, restricting it to overtaking and prohibiting trucks and buses. Violations carry a €150 fine and a 20‑day licence suspension for drivers, while heavy‑vehicle misuse of the lane incurs a €350 fine and a 30‑day licence suspension.
