Greece rejects redrawing Greece-Cyprus power cable route
Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis has stated that there is no reason to redraw the route of the planned electricity interconnection cable between Greece and Cyprus. He emphasized that the project will proceed according to the design of the contractor and will follow established international maritime law.
Gerapetritis clarified that the cable route passes through undefined maritime zones and stays on the Greek continental shelf, avoiding what Turkey refers to as its “maritime parks” by dozens of miles. He noted that the project is part of Greece’s energy diversification plan and that the Greek government will be the sole authority to license the project, even if the involved company is French.
The Minister added that communication with neighboring states is possible through standard procedures, such as the issuance of NAVTEX, to ensure maritime safety and inform all relevant parties.
