Greece replaces 25 public document requirements with a single declaration

The Greek government has fully implemented law 5293/2026, which substitutes the 25 most frequently requested documents in public transactions with a single responsible declaration. The reform simplifies 1,007 of the roughly 2,500 administrative procedures recorded in the national registry (MITOS), covering about 40 % of all processes across 32 public agencies.

An estimated 42.5 million paper documents will be saved each year for citizens and businesses. The change applies to 622 citizen‑related procedures and 385 business‑related ones, affecting ministries such as Labour and Social Security, Education, National Defence, Social Cohesion and the Economy. Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Khatzidakis said the measure is “a very important reform step” that makes the state “more friendly to the citizen.” The new system will have public services automatically retrieve and verify data from state databases, eliminating the need for individuals to obtain certificates such as criminal records, academic titles, tax and insurance confirmations, or civil‑registry extracts.
