Greek bureaucracy reform 2026

In July 2026 the Greek government enacted Law 5293/2026, a reform aimed at slashing administrative paperwork. The legislation replaces the 25 most‑frequently requested public documents with a single “responsible statement” that can be verified automatically against state databases.

The change affects roughly 1,007 of the 2,500 procedures recorded in the MITOS registry – about 40 % of all citizen‑related and business‑related transactions across 32 public agencies, including ministries of Labour, Education, Defence and the Economy. It is projected to eliminate around 42.5 million paper documents each year.

Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Chatzidakis presented the measure as a major step toward a more citizen‑friendly state, and the reform was fully implemented on the same day, confirming the shift from a multi‑document requirement system to a streamlined declaration process.
