Greece reports high teacher vacancy coverage for 2026-27 school year

The 2026-27 school year in Greece has commenced with significantly higher coverage of teacher vacancies compared to the previous year. According to data from the Ministry of Education, coverage for subjects examined in national exams has reached nearly 100% in 11 out of 13 regions.

Specifically, the regions of Epirus, Thessaly, and Western Macedonia achieved 100% coverage for these critical subjects. Other regions, including Eastern and Central Macedonia, Crete, the North Aegean, Central Greece, and the Ionian Islands (excluding Kefalonia), also reported high coverage rates. At the regional education directorate level, 40 out of 49 monitored directorates reported coverage exceeding 90%, with 30 reaching 100%.

The staffing process involved 29,948 hires of teachers and special education personnel. Following the first phase of recruitment completed in mid-September, a second phase was initiated on September 29 to address remaining vacancies caused by resignations or non-appointments.
