Rising school costs and evolving teacher coverage in Greece

Overview

Families in Greece, Spain, and Portugal continue to face significant financial pressure due to rising educational costs. In Greece, initial preparation costs for stationery and supplies reach approximately 130 to 165 euros per child, while high school students face monthly tutoring averages of 600 to 800 euros.

Regarding staffing for the 2026-2027 school year, the Ministry of Education reported high coverage for subjects examined in national exams, reaching nearly 100% in 11 out of 13 regions. However, political opposition has challenged these figures. The PASOK party warned that the system is nearing a “crisis point,” claiming that an estimated 16,000 teaching vacancies remained unfilled one month after the school year began, forcing schools to merge or cancel classes.

To address ongoing staffing needs and vacancies caused by resignations or non-appointments, the Ministry of Education has launched further recruitment drives. On October 8, the Ministry announced the recruitment of 2,096 supplementary staff members for the 2026-2027 academic year. This includes 2,008 teachers for primary and secondary education and 86 members of Special Educational Personnel (EEP) and Special Auxiliary Personnel (EVP). The special personnel roles are distributed across Special Education Units, specialized support, multidisciplinary assessment centers, and refugee reception classes. New recruits are expected to report for duty between October 15 and October 16, 2026.

Concerns also persist regarding school infrastructure. While the ‘Marietta Giannakou’ program utilizes bank donations for improvements, critics argue these interventions are insufficient, noting that the first two phases cover only 669 schools, or approximately 4.8% of the country’s total school units.
