Greece economic trends show rising foreign investment and household spending
Greece is experiencing significant shifts in its economic landscape, characterized by rising foreign investment and changing consumer patterns. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) nearly doubled in the first seven months of 2026, reaching €7.6 billion. This surge was driven by major transactions, including UniCredit increasing its stake in Alpha Bank and a €4.25 billion capital increase by the Public Power Corporation (PPC), which saw a €1.2 billion contribution from CVC Capital Partners.
On the consumer side, total monthly household spending in Greece rose by 5.5% in 2025, reaching an average of €1,820. While food remains the largest expenditure at 20.4%, spending on clothing and footwear saw a 2.5% increase, totaling €4.6 billion annually.
The labor market shows mixed signals. While unemployment rates have seen declines in certain periods, reports indicate a rise in job vacancies and a persistent gender gap in labor-market participation. Additionally, the logistics sector is bracing for significant growth, with over €800 million in investments expected for new warehouse facilities between 2026 and 2029 to meet high demand.
