Greece reviews 50% ownership rule for 'Renovate‑Rent' housing subsidy program
The Greek government is reviewing the ownership threshold for participation in the "Ανακαινίζω – Νοικιάζω" (Renovate‑Rent) housing renovation subsidy. The current rule requires at least 50% ownership or usufruct; Deputy Finance Minister Nikos Papathanasis said the limit is under study, with no decision yet. The online platform has attracted about 100,000 visitors, and 300 enterprises are participating in the related "Επιχειρώ" scheme, which has a €90 million budget.
The program, launched in June 2024, has a total budget of €500 million and aims to subsidise up to 20,000 dwellings built before 1990. Applications are open from 15 June to the end of August for eligibility checks, with full submissions expected in early September. Eligible properties must meet construction‑year, size, energy‑class and occupancy criteria. Grants can reach €36 000 per home, covering 80‑95 % of renovation costs for qualifying families, with extra bonuses for large families, disabled members and island or mountain locations. Covered works include structural, plumbing, electrical, and energy‑efficiency upgrades.
