Greece revitalizes historic Xenia hotel network for tourism

The Hellenic Public Properties Company (ETAD) is accelerating a strategic plan to revitalize the historic Xenia hotel network, aiming to transform these iconic architectural landmarks into hubs for regional development. The initiative focuses on promoting ‘slow tourism’ by connecting travelers with local identity and heritage, moving away from mass tourism models.

As of 2026, ETAD is managing a portfolio of 29 properties and tourist kiosks. Currently, 13 are leased, four are in the contract signing phase, and the remainder are being prepared for upcoming tenders. CEO Iro Hatzigeorgiou noted that the strategy emphasizes respect for the cultural value of the buildings. In the first half of 2026 alone, seven projects proceeded through contracts and new tenders.

The revitalization plan extends through 2027, with a specific focus on Northern Greece and the Peloponnese. Key upcoming tenders include the Xenia hotel in Drama, the Kalentzio Mansion in Achaia, and properties in Vytina, Kozani, and Komotini.
