Greece prepares for 2026-2027 school year with new curriculum and staffings

Greece is preparing for the 2026-2027 school year with several administrative updates from the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports. Schools are scheduled to welcome students on Friday, September 11, 2026, with regular classes beginning on Monday, September 14.

A significant curriculum change involves the introduction of an autonomous Ethics course. This subject is specifically for students exempt from Religious Studies and will be taught in middle schools, high schools, and the final four years of primary school. To organize these classes, a minimum of ten exempt students per class is required; otherwise, students may be assigned to other subjects or creative activities.

Regarding staffing, the Ministry has announced the permanent appointment of 4,789 teachers across various sectors, including general education, special education, and music schools. These educators are expected to undergo swearing-in and assume their duties between August 24 and August 28, 2026. Additionally, applications are open for substitute special education personnel and hourly instructors at the Sibitanidios School of Arts. Finally, 89 teachers have been placed in Experimental Schools across various regions of the country for the upcoming academic year.
