Greece extends use of old ID cards for digital services until 2027
A ministerial decision published in the Government Gazette (ΦΕΚ B 5441/30.09.2024) extends the acceptance of certain old police identity cards for remote electronic identification procedures until 25 September 2027. The extension applies only to online services that issue trust‑service certificates and does not revive the cards as general travel documents or proof of identity.
The measure aims to mitigate delays in issuing new ID cards, allowing citizens whose cards display their name in Latin characters, as well as ID cards of armed forces and security personnel and valid residence permits for third‑country nationals, to continue using the cards for the specified digital services.
The extension is limited to the listed electronic procedures; new identity cards will still be issued under the regular schedule.
